We talk often about work-life balance, but there is no magic formula anyone can give you to perfect the act. There is no one-size fits all balance you should be striving for. The optimal work-life balance varies and is different for each of us because we all have different priorities and different lives. Moreover, the right balance depends on circumstances. But why is work-life balance important and how do you increase your odds at achieving it?
Why is work-life balance important?
A healthy work-life balance has positive influence not only on relationships but is as well beneficial for general performance. Employees are happier and more creative when they get the chance to develop their personal interests and make use of valuable skills related to productive work. Most of the time organisations impose a work-life proportion to all employees without taking into account their circumstances, personality, goals and ambitions. The one-size-fits-all model fails more often than it doesn’t. This is actually a chance for leaders to give ownership about their professional and personal choices to trusted employees. That requires a deep change in how we precept organisations, authority, obligation and responsibilities. In other words, it requires conscious effort. But let’s say you are willing to give this level of trust to your employees or you get the freedom to decide on the balancing act. How would you enable a healthy work-life balance?
Achievement and Enjoyment.
There are two key concepts that are essential for achieving a meaningful mix. Achievement and Enjoyment are the front and back of the coin of value in life. The one without the other only tips the scale against your well-being and happiness. Many people who only focused on results and efficiency, might be considered successful according to some standards, but they lose sight of their happiness. They get lost on “one of these days” or “as soon as I achieve that target”; the life dulling habit of planning on getting around to the joys of life.On the contrary; people who only strive for leisure and entertainment, will feel a void that cannot be filled without dedication to achieve and preform. Satisfaction comes with hard work. You cannot get the full value from life without BOTH Achievement and Enjoyment. If you ‘feed both wolves’, you will lay ground for growth and meaning in your life. These are simple concepts to remind you to bring balance to your everyday life. The goal is to empower the employee who is also a friend, a father, a sister, etc.
